FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 21, 2003

Take Art Off the Wall with the UrbanArt Commission
Tuesday, July 29, 2003, 6–7:30 pm
The Memphis Brooks Musuem of Art - 1934 Poplar Avenue

All artists who want to 1) incorporate their two-dimensional imagery into projects that are not accommodating to wall murals; 2) learn how the materials frequently used in construction projects have been adapted for use in public art; and 3) work with fabricators to complete public art commissions should attend this seminar.

Experienced local public artists will facilitate the workshop. All are artists whose artwork has been translated into basic construction materials. Presenters include Pam Cobb (stainless steel cutouts for the Memphis Police Department’s Northeast Precinct), Kristi Duckworth (colored concrete for the City of Memphis Hickory Hill Supersite), Lurlynn Franklin (vinyl compression tiles for Memphis City Schools Downtown School) and Pinkney Herbert (terrazzo for the Memphis Shelby County Central Library). Participants will be introduced to the process of working with fabricators and other material specialists.

This event was created with the support of the UAC Communications and Education Committee of the UrbanArt Commission. The committee recommends the annual education and seminar programming, which includes: brown bag lunches, lectures, workshops, focus groups and other presentations. The goal of the UAC Communications and Education Committee is to assist in the development of programs to facilitate artist, architect, developer, public and donor participation in public art projects. The event is free and open to artists who reserve a space before Friday, July 25, 2003. For more details or to reserve a spot, please call the UAC at 901-252-0880 or log on to www.urbanartcommission.org.

The UrbanArt Commission was established in 1997 through the vision of Founding Chair Kristi Jernigan and through the collaborative efforts of the Memphis Arts Council and the Shelby County Government. The mission of the UAC is to enhance and elevate the quality of life in Memphis and Shelby County by promoting and facilitating public art and urban design.
