UAC Reveals the Secrets of Public Art Selection Process
How To Get a Public Art Commission
Thursday March 6, 2003, from 6:00 – 7:30
Memphis/Shelby County Central Library  - 3030 Poplar Avenue
Memphis artists will learn how public art projects are awarded.

All artists who are interested in learning how selection committees determine their choices; what elements are necessary for a complete proposal; and how to present ideas in a written format should attend this event.

Guest panelists will facilitate the workshop. Panelists include: a selection panelist from two City of Memphis Division of General Services projects; a faculty member of the LeMoyne-Owen English Department; an artist who has participated in several local and national public art projects and a representative from the City Of Memphis.  The goal is to help artists gain greater confidence as they apply for projects, nationally and locally – including the 10 projects with a combined budget of $452,000 delineated in the 2003 Public Art Plan for the City of Memphis.

This event was created with the support of the Communications and Education Committee of the UrbanArt Commission.  The committee recommends the annual education and seminar programming which includes: brown bag lunches as well as lectures, workshops, focus groups and other presentations. The goal of the UAC Communications and Education Committee is to assist in the development of programs to facilitate artist, architect, developer, public and donor participation in public art projects.  The event is free and open to artists who reserve a space before Tuesday, March 4, 2003.  Please call the UAC at 901-252-0880 or log on to www.urbanartcommission.org for more details or to reserve a spot.

The UrbanArt Commission was established in 1997 through the vision of Founding Chair Kristi Jernigan and through the collaborative efforts of the Memphis Arts Council and the Shelby County Government. The mission of the UAC is to enhance and elevate the quality of life in Memphis and Shelby County by promoting and facilitating public art and urban design.
