MATA Madison Avenue Trolley Line Opens

The Madison Avenue Trolley Line is open for business and features permanent public art in six stations by five local artists.

The art enhancement program for the Madison Avenue Line was developed in 2000. MATA set aside $100,000 for public art to be incorporated into the trolley expansion. The UAC agreed to oversee the program pro-bono and to raise additional funds for the project. First Tennessee, the UT Memphis Student Government Association and the Tennessee Arts Commission generously donated a total of $66,000 to the project.

In 2001 a call to artists was distributed and artists were selected by MATA representatives, representatives from the Edge (the area around Sun Studio and Marshall Arts Gallery), artists, and arts professionals. They selected five artists to complete designs for the six stations.

The artists developed the themes for the stations drawing heavily, where appropriate, on the history and character of the area surrounding each stop. During design and fabrication they worked closely with MATA, the project architect (Self Tucker Architects), UAC and Hill Brothers Construction to ensure that the projects were in keeping with the spirit of the architecture and the functional requirements of the stations.

UAC hopes MATA will remain committed to the art enhancement program and include art enhancement funds in all future rail extensions. In the near future other artistic elements will be incorporated into station railings, an additional design feature required by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

Upcoming Projects - Sexton Community Center

The existing Katie Sexton Community Center, located at 1235 Brown Street in Klondike Park, is being renovated and expanded. The renovation is the final phase in a series of upgrades that included the Charlie F. Morris, Sr., Aquatic Facility. The pool opened in June 2000 within the community center with zero-depth entry, water toys, learn-to-swim instruction and other amenities.

The renovation project is scheduled to be completed within the next few months. The UAC staff will work with the architect and the selection panel to identify and recommend art opportunities within the completed facility. The neighboring schools - Northside High and Klondike Elementary offer excellent opportunities for community participation in the design and/or fabrication of the artwork. Look for your Sexton Community Center call to artists in the mail soon!

****Portland, OR
Regional Arts & Culture Council
Deadline: April 2, 2004 at 5:00 pm PST

The Regional Arts & Culture Council (Portland, OR) is pleased to invite artists/teams
to submit qualifications for a public art project for the 3rd and 4th Avenue Streetscape project. A total of $150,000 is available for the public art.

At the heart of the new streetscape design are the two "Festival Streets," on NW Davis and NW Flanders. One of the most frequent comments heard from the public during outreach was the need for flexible neighborhood public space. In response, the Festival Streets will be curbless with black granite bollards to delineate the boundary between sidewalk and street. The streets are designed to accommodate temporary closure for neighborhood events. The street area will be scored concrete with an eight-foot wide band of 16" x 16" gold granite pavers in a large rectangle that forms the sidewalks on both sides and a band across each end of the roadway.

The Selection Panel, fueled by input from the community, would like the artwork commissioned for this project to draw inspiration from or be reflective of one or more aspects of the history, cultural influences (past and present) or future uses of the area. The mix of cultures within the neighborhood has been varied over time (Chinese, Japanese, Greek, African American, etc.) and the neighborhood now includes two historic districtsÜthe New Chinatown/Japantown Historic District and the Skidmore/Old Town Historic District. The Japanese presence before the internment during World War II was quite strong, with a particular focus on Third Avenue.

The artwork should welcome students, staff and visitors to the school.

Each jury has seven members including the project architect, a user of the building, representatives of the Urban Design Commission, the Arts Advisory Commission, the History and Fine Arts Commission and two citizens of the community "at largeÓ, one of whom must be a professional artist.
