Announcement of Projects with City of Memphis

The UrbanArt Commission and the City of Memphis will host an event to announce new public art projects for the City’s Public Art Plan 2003. The event will be held on February 20, 5:30-7 PM at City Hall. More information about this event will be released soon.



Art Exhibits at the Memphis Arts Council

The exhibit “In Retrospect #2” by Everett Charles Yates that is currently showing at the Memphis Arts Council has been extended until February 24. A new exhibit by Wess Loudenslager, “The Angel Series,” will open with a reception for the artist on Friday, February 28, from 5-7 PM. The Memphis Arts Council is located at 8 South Third Street on the third floor.

Writing Proposals II - Applying for Grants—Friday, February 21, 2003—12:30 pm
at the Memphis Literacy Council – 902 South Cooper

Join UAC as Sandra Burke, non-profit management consultant and visiting lecturer for Crichton College, reviews the basics of researching grants and writing grant proposals. Space is limited and early reservations are encouraged.

 

This is the second UAC Writing Workshop designed to introduce studio artists and others to some of the best methods for writing proposals particularly for public art and urban design projects and related grants.

Sound Transit

Sound Transit and the Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority is building light rail, commuter rail and express bus facilities in three counties and 54 cities. 1% of the construction budget has been set aside for art. Sixty-seven artists have been awarded commissions to date. Additional artists will be selected for a wide range of projects from creating temporary art for construction sites to designing art for future transit facilities.

Artists for Sound Transit project are chosen from a roster. To apply, please submit a letter of interest, resume, up to 20 slides of previous work and a numbered slide sheet to STart, 401 S. Jackson Street, Seattle, WA 98104-2826."

Hargraves Community Center

Request for Qualifications

Deadline: March 10, 2003

 

The Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission seeks to commission an artwork(s) for the Hargraves Community Center in Chapel Hill, NC under the Town's Percent for Art Program.  The project budget is $20,000 to $25,000. Integral to this project is the willingness of the artist to learn in depth about the community.  The artwork(s) should create excitement and interest for the community; honor and commemorate the rich African-American history of the Center; celebrate the impact the Center has had on the community; and , inspire the young people to remember the past, highlight their activities at the Center, and inspire them to see a legacy that belongs to them and to future generations. Works in a variety of media and forms will be considered.Please send 15 slides, a current resume, and a list of three professional references to CHPAC, 306 N. The Judy Cheteyan Scholarship Fund / Summer Paid Internship

The Judy Cheteyan Scholarship provides an art student with the opportunity to work in a professional art environment either as an administrator or assisting with our studio programs. The scholarship is used to pay a $2500 stipend to the student during the summer internship. Please encourage anyone you feel should apply for this scholarship. All of the required materials must be received by March 30, 2003, and all applicants will be notified by May 1. Palm City Community Fire Station

Deadline: April 14, 2003

 

The Martin County Public Art Advisory Board is seeking to purchase or commission a public artwork for the exterior space of the new Palm City Community Fire Station. Photographs of the station are available online. The schematic design phase is complete. The project is scheduled to be bid on January 2003, with a construction time period of 12 months. The building will be open in February 2004. The Martin County Public Art Advisory Board is seeking a work of outdoor art for the new community fire station. The work may the placed in the main exterior entrance area of the Fire Station, or another area proposed by the artist. The artwork needs to be "drive-by" scale as this will not be in an area that shall receive significant pedestrian traffic. The artwork can be an existing artwork or new site-specific commission. The artwork may be required to accommodate some landscaping. All submissions will be considered, including artwork with a fire services theme and/or functional artworks.

UrbanArt Commission

The UrbanArt Commission was established in 1997 through the vision of Kristi Jernigan and through the collaborative efforts of the Memphis Arts Council and Shelby County Government. The mission of the UAC is to enhance and elevate the quality of life in Memphis and Shelby County by promoting and facilitating public art and urban design.
