I Love Memphis mural #6: Urban Art across the Street from the Stax Museum

October 16th, 2013

The "I Love Memphis" series continues with mural #6 by local artists Jeanyne Lewis and Whitney Kerr who created the winning design. Naturally, with a location across the street from the Stax Museum, the mural will feature a musical theme.

Painting the mural are aspiring mural painter Allison Lawyer, Jinweg Luo of Rhodes College, and Stax Music Academy students, Josiah Taylor and Karlos Stevison, under the guidance of Stax instructor Melody Barham. UrbanArt Director of Public Art Siphne Sylve was on site to give a demonstration on professional priming and mural painting techniques. In the next phase, the group will focus on drawing the design. A LCD projector will be used to outline the design. From there, the shapes will be filled in with color.

This mural is created in partnership with LeMoyne-Owen College and the Stax Music Academy. Part of the UrbanArt Commission Community Public Art Program, the work is funded by the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau, an ArtsMemphis Mosaic Grant and the Tennessee Arts Commission.
