Learning Through the Arts
UrbanArt Commission worked with the Center for Arts Education to create a public art project that utilizes columns in the foyer of Bruce Elementary School.
Throughout this projce students of Bruce Elementary worked with Bruce Elementary School art teacher Janna Bernstein to create drawings based on the project theme of “Learning through the Arts.” The students had the opportunity to attend theatrical and musical performances as well as artist visits and were then asked to depict their experience of “learning through the arts.” Artist Scott Adams then transformed the children's drawings into tile mosaic murals that are installed on columns in the school's entrance lobby. Both Bernstein and Adams, in addition to volunteers, instructed and collaborated with students in techniques of making mosaics.
This project was funded in part by a Millennium Grant from the Memphis Flyer and a Material Grant from Home Depot.
